USA TODAY Sports Network is seeking an enterprising and collaborative editor to help lead coverage of the NFL for the nation’s largest media organization. The person in this role will manage and mentor a team of reporters and help guide our day-to-day reporting, including breaking news, as well as lead our enterprise and project coverage, making sure we’re moving stories forward at the speed of news and aggressively seeking the sources, story forms and information that will differentiate our coverage. You’ll also get the opportunity to collaborate with other reporters and editors to further elevate our enterprise and investigative work. This role is remote and can be based anywhere in the US, except for Alaska, Hawaii and Wyoming. Ideal for a high-performing people manager with a demonstrated history of growing audience.
Responsibilities:
- Direct day-to-day coverage, including breaking news, of the NFL in collaboration with the NFL editor and other leaders, assuring urgency that goes beyond the basic facts and first headline and pushes forward into the impact of the news and what it means for the our audience — from fantasy football players to fans trying to find where to watch their favorite team this week to community members concerned about new stadium funding and everyone in between.
- Take a leading role in assuring enterprise reporting is part of our daily offering, assigning with an eye for audience engagement and guiding direct reports and others from across the team in the ideation and reporting process.
- Use SEO, analytics and optimization techniquest to grow readership and engagement. Regularly engage reporters in discussions about metrics and story optimization best practices, helping them understand their role in audience growth.
- Collaborate with video, podcast, social, graphics and other teams as needed to amplify, supplment and improve NFL content as well as other editors and reporters to tell bigger stories.
- Contribute to daily and event, including the Super Bowl and the NFL draft, planning with meticulous documentation that allows for wide understanding and execution as we leverage the size of the USA TODAY newsroom and network to deliver coverage to millions of readers.
- Maintain USA TODAY Co.’s high standard of journalistic integrity and ethical reporting.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications or equivalent field. Equivalent work experience is welcomed.
- Minimum of eight years of journalism management experience, with strong background leading sports content teams.
- Exceptional news judgement as well as strong editing and writing skills.
- Ability to work nights, weekends and during high-volume news cycles.
- Willingness to contribute across the USA TODAY Sports Network team as required around major sporting events.
- Proficiency in digital publishing, metrics and SEO best practices.
- Be a willing learner, ready to explore new tools and techniques to improve our workflows and our work.

The annualized base salary for this role will range between $83,000 and $129,688. Base compensation is reflective of many factors, including, but not limited to, the market in which one lives/works, individual education level, skills, certifications and experience. Note: variable compensation is not reflected in these figures and based on the role, may be applicable.
